These bite-sized turtle-shaped castella cakes are said to stay soft even when cool. Warabi mochi, chilled hiyashi ame and other sweets are also options before or after visiting Shitennoji.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
After visiting Shitennoji, look for the turtle-shaped, bite-sized castella cakes at Genjido. Some visitors have enjoyed a cup of “Kame Kasutēra” as they walk around the temple grounds, describing the cakes as soft even when cool, with a gentle sweetness. Their small size makes them easy to finish, and they are also said to make a popular gift to share with friends.
For something to enjoy at a slower pace, there is warabi mochi or awa mochi filled with sweet bean paste. Visitors have also mentioned mizumanju and tokoroten, so there is the option of choosing another sweet to eat on the spot as well as taking turtle castella home.
For a drink, consider hiyashi ame, which appears among the menu options. One visitor said they liked its rich flavour; it sounds like a drink worth trying alongside something sweet.
